Summary

Cover the Bases: Ins and Outs of Social Security and Disability Law is made possible by the Disability Law Section of the Akron Bar Association and Foundation (Rubber City CLE). In this 3.0 General CLE, attendees will participate in 3 modules: Module 1 - Social Security: Leaving No Stone Unturned. This module will cover disability topics relevant for both disability and elder law; attorneys, including the spectrum of disability programs, the hurdles clients encounter when applying for benefits, the complexities that arise during the application process, and strategies to address post-award challenges; Module 2 - Representing Individuals with Developmental Disabilities. This module will discuss who is Summit DD. Presenting a quick overview of the services performed by the county board with some history of the agency. It will then go over the Bill of Rights for Persons with DD. (R. C. 5123.62), the importance of “People First” language, Connect Court and Other services related to the judicial system, Adult Guardianship program, Working with SSA, Collaborating on Individual Service Plan, and Waiver Funded/Local Funded Services; Module 3 - Navigating ABLE Accounts and Special Needs Trusts. The presentation will cover ABLE Accounts and three different types of special needs trusts (Third Party Special Needs Trusts, First Party Special Needs Trusts, and Pooled Medicaid Payback Trusts), and when and why they should be considered as part of
the planning for individuals that are eligible for governmental benefits.
