Summary

In this One-Hour (1.0) General CLE course, Professor Tracy Thomas, University of Akron, explores Judge Allen as the first woman in the country elected to a general trial court in Cleveland in 1920. The first woman elected to a state Supreme Court anywhere in the country, elected to the Ohio Supreme Court in 1922. The first woman federal appellate judge, appointed by FDR to the Sixth Circuit in 1934. And the first woman shortlisted to the U.S. Supreme Court, considered by four presidents for thirteen vacancies.  It is an interesting story not just about her, but also about how women more generally integrated and transformed the courts.
