Summary

At first glance, putting a disability litigator and an insurance company representative side by side might seem surprising—but that’s exactly what makes this CLE valuable. This program brings together both perspectives to help attorneys and their clients better understand the realities of group long-term disability (LTD) policies and the role of additional private coverage.

Attorney Andrew November, who regularly litigates group LTD claims under employer-provided policies, will share insights into the challenges employees face when they become disabled and try to access benefits. He’ll cover the limitations, hurdles, and litigation issues that arise when group policies are the only safety net.

Then, Tasha Jo Hill, a representative from Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, will explain how private disability coverage can fill in the gaps left by group LTD plans. She’ll discuss ownership, portability, benefit design, mental health limitations, and other key features, while reframing income protection as a cornerstone of sound financial planning. She will also highlight the Guardian disability insurance benefits available to attorneys through their CMBA membership, so participants can see firsthand how these protections work in practice.

Whether you litigate LTD claims, advise clients on their benefit options, or want to understand how your own group and private policies interact, this program will provide practical takeaways and a rare chance to hear candid insights from both sides of the disability insurance equation.
