Summary

Dayton, Ohio and Its Intellectual Property
Patents, Copyrights, Trademarks, and Ethical Considerations in IP Practice

Agenda
This program will provide general practitioners with a practical and comprehensive introduction to key intellectual property concepts, with a special emphasis on Dayton, Ohio’s impressive history of inventors and technological innovation. Presenters Matthew Jenkins, Louis Sitler, and Gary Leppla will begin with a foundational session covering patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, and related forms of protection. The goal is to equip attendees with the essential knowledge needed to spot IP issues in day-to-day practice, understand the lifecycle of different types of intellectual property, and recognize when referral to an IP specialist may be necessary.

Following the morning break, the session will shift to an in-depth discussion of ethical issues that frequently arise in matters involving intellectual property. Topics will include conflicts of interest when representing clients with competing IP rights, confidentiality concerns involving trade secrets and proprietary technologies, challenges associated with client counseling in complex technical subject areas, and best practices for complying with professional responsibility rules. Drawing from their substantial collective experience, the presenters will offer real-world examples and practical guidance to help practitioners avoid common pitfalls and uphold the highest ethical standards when handling IP-related matters.
